HELD INCOMMUNICADO AND TORTURED, SYRIAN JOURNALIST MAZEN DARWISH COULD DIE.

HELD INCOMMUNICADO AND TORTURED,
SYRIAN JOURNALIST MAZEN DARWISH COULD DIE.

Mazen Darwish, the head of the Damascus-based Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM), and 15 of his colleagues were arrested by Air Force Intelligence officers during a raid on the centre on 16 February.

According to our sources, he has been badly tortured in detention. We have good reason to think his life is in danger because he suffers from serious ailments and his condition could worsen rapidly if he is not getting the treatment he needs. The Syrian authorities refuse to say where he is being held. He is not being allowed access to his family or lawyers, in complete violation of international law. So far, no charges have been brought against him.

Darwish is in grave danger. The authorities arrested him in order to silence him, because he was telling the outside world about acts of violence by a regime that persists in its deadly folly. A staunch defender of human rights and freedom of expression, Darwish played a key role in providing daily information about the situation in Syria, at a time when almost all foreign journalists are banned from visiting the country.

Without the courage of Syrian journalists and bloggers, no freely reported news and information would be available. You can help to change their destiny. Support our efforts to obtain the release of Darwish and the hundreds of other journalists imprisoned throughout the world. Make a donation!

4 more men in long-running Somali terrorism investigation in Minnesota get prison time

Associated Press -  FILE - This combination of undated photos show Somali nationals, from left,
Mahamud Said Omar, Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, Salah Osman Ahmed, and Omer Abdi Mohamed. Nine people convicted in a government investigation of terror recruitment and financing for an al-Qaida-linked group in Somalia are to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis. Authorities say more than 20 young men

By Associated Press,

MINNEAPOLIS — Two men who left Minnesota to join al-Shabab in Somalia were sentenced Tuesday to three years in federal prison, while a man they characterized as a local leader in efforts to recruit them to the terrorist group was sentenced to 12 years.

They were among six men sentenced this week for their roles in the government’s long-running investigation into the travels of more than 20 young men who left Minnesota to join the al-Qaida-linked group in Somalia — a phenomenon that has been called one of the largest efforts to recruit U.S. fighters into a foreign terrorist group.

Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, 29, and Salah Osman Ahmed, 30, both left Minnesota and traveled to Somalia in 2007. They both spent about a week in an al-Shabab training camp before they said they realized what the group was all about and escaped.

The government recommended they receive less than the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison because they cooperated. Chief U.S. District Judge Michael Davis went even lower than prosecutors recommended, sentencing them to three years.

The timing of their departure from al-Shabab was not lost on Davis, who a day earlier gave a 10-year sentence to a man who stayed in the camp longer and participated in an ambush.

“I’m going to take a chance on you,” Davis told Isse. “You devised a scheme to get away. That told me a lot about you. ... If you had been involved in the ambush, you’d be doing a lot of time.

“You’ve got a lot to live up to now,” the judge added. “If I’m wrong about you, it’s on my head.”

As part of their cooperation, Isse and Ahmed testified in the recent trial of another defendant. In that trial, they characterized Omer Abdi Mohamed as a leader in recruitment efforts, saying he used the Quran to convince them they were doing the right thing.

Davis sentenced Mohamed to 12 years on Tuesday, without providing a reason. But after hearing that witness testimony about Mohamed last October, and learning that Mohamed was volunteering at a school, Davis called Mohamed “a danger to the community.”

In his guilty plea in 2011, Mohamed admitted he attended secret meetings and helped recruits get plane tickets — even providing a false itinerary for one traveler — but he never traveled to Somalia himself. He faced a maximum of 15 years, but the government recommended slightly less because he cooperated.

Mohamed’s attorney, Peter Wold, was stunned by the sentence.

“I’m distraught,” he said afterward, adding he plans to appeal.

Wold told Davis during the hearing that another man, not Mohamed, was the real ringleader and that the travelers were not motivated by the Quran, but instead went to fight Ethiopian troops.

Many Somalis viewed the Ethiopians as invaders in their homeland.

Wold said after Mohamed learned the truth about al-Shabab, he distanced himself from the group’s activity.

Mohamed asked Davis for mercy, and said he would never harm the U.S.

The courtroom was packed with dozens of Mohamed supporters. Wold told the judge about 200 Somali community members wrote letters to the court on his client’s behalf, calling Mohamed respectful, kind and helpful.

“I have a very strong community that knows my heart,” Mohamed said.

An Ohio man who admitted that he helped raise money so others could travel from Minnesota to Somalia was also sentenced Tuesday. Ahmed Hussein Mahamud, who lived in Minnesota until moving to Ohio in 2011, received three years in prison on one terror-related count.

His attorney, Rick Mattox, said his client was a “target of the conspiracy, a would-be traveler” who didn’t go to Somalia.

Three more people face sentencing later this week in this case and in a case on terror financing.

Davis, who has overseen these cases for years, said he still struggles to understand what would make young men from good families, who came to Minnesota as refugees, choose to return to violence.

“We have to figure out what’s going on and try to make sure this never happens again,” he said.

Somaliland: Government takes Control of Airspace as it Bans UN Flights

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – "As from 15th May at 6 am UN Flights are banned from entering Somaliland and any of its Aircraft already on the ground shall not be allowed to take-off until further notice"

This order was issued by the minister of Aviation Mr Mahmud Hashi Abdi at a press conference held at Egal Airport in Hargeisa where he also informed that UNDP is acting in a manner likely to impinge negatively on dialogue with Somalia.

The banning order which shall affect the UN's operated carrier UN Humanitarian Air Support-UNHAS comes after the UN through its UNDP agency handed over Somaliland's airspace control to the Mogadishu government yesterday.

"For 22 years now Somaliland has been operating as an independent nation and shall thence not accept to be and shall never be under any sort of jurisdictional management from Somalia" said minister Hashi

Informing that the UN has no authority over Somaliland's airspace or economic zones the aviation minister also informed that the yet to be unrecognized country shall take full control of its airspace soon.

Said he, "As from the 27th July 2013 Somaliland shall take full managerial control of its airspace and Airports"

According to Minister Hashi the period between now and the date designated for assumption of full airspace control has been set aside to facilitate bookkeeping with UN's International Civil Aviation Organization-ICAO which has been roughshod ding air travel management for 22 years.

Revealing that ICAO has been collecting over $10m revenue annually from Somaliland airspace, minister Mahmud Hashi said the country's share of the millions in dollars has been salary payment for around 40 aviation industry personnel and nothing else.

The Aviation boss who termed the UNDP act to hand over Somaliland's airspace management to Somalia as illegal also said it is contrary to not only agreements entered upon by the two countries but shall impinge negatively on the on-going internationally and supported dialogue between them as well.

At the same time the International Air Travel Association-IATA was asked to take note of the 27th July 2013 date thus advise its members operating in or utilizing Somaliland's airspace to deal directly with the Hargeisa based authorities.

In concluding his press briefing the aviation minister Mr Mahmud Hashi Abdi who reiterated Somaliland's sovereignty informed that the nation though peace loving shall not be cowed by any quarters and it shall respond to gestures of friendship and enmity in-kind

As we await reaction from the UN as per the ban on its flights that only serve its personnel and others from working for international organizations the only recourse left for these expatriates are airlifts from the European Community Humanitarian Office-ECHO operated carriers.

Meanwhile the move by the government has received mixed reactions from members of the public with a few opinionating that the decision might be harmful to the national.

The moves supporters who are in the majority say this is the best thing to happen to the country in 22 years and that the UN can if it wills cease providing the pennies that trickle down after millions allocated are spend in high class hotels in the notorious triangle of Hargeisa-Nairobi-Geneva not to mention the cosy two people aircraft rentals.

As for recognition of Somaliland supporters say the international community can continue its 22 years overdue acknowledgement of the country's' sovereignty since Allah and citizens have already recognized Somaliland as an independent country.

Somaliland: Government Reacts to Negative Remarks by UN Deputy Secretary General

 By: Yusuf M Hasan

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – "It is a matter for regret that some in the UN Secretariat are apparently not fully or correctly informed about the situation in Somaliland"

This is per a letter addressed to Ban Ki Moon the United Nations Secretary General by the Somaliland minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Abdilahi Omar who was reacting to recent comments made by UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson on 9th May.

While touching on the issue of at a post London convenience on Somalia on the 9th of May Mr Jan Eliasson implied that Somaliland might have attended this year's Conference as part of Somalia's delegation.

The foreign minister counters this by informing that participation would have been impossible because it would have been a breach of the democratic compact between the government of Somaliland and its citizens, who voted overwhelmingly in a 2001 referendum in favour of our national constitution that declares Somaliland to be independent.

On The UN Deputy Secretary General sentiments that the world body is fully committed to supporting the Somalia administration of president Hasan in re-establishing a fully functional federal state, Dr Omar says that while Somaliland is support of the UN's efforts to stabilise Somalia it should not be misconstrued as a region or lumped together with other administrative regions of Somalia.

According to Dr Omar "the reality is that Somaliland has existed as a separate state for the last 22 years, since the failed Union of Somalia dissolved following a bloody civil war. While we are grateful to all those who provide assistance to support peace and stability in Somalia, we will only join partners in discussions on such issues if we are accorded the appropriate status, as we were in 2012"

This letter comes a day after the government banned UN operated flights from the country after UNDP announced that it had given full airspace control including that of Somaliland to the administration in Mogadishu.

Below are the verbatim excerpts of the Dr Omar Communication to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
Quote - 15 May, 2013

H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon
Secretary-General of the United Nations
United Nations
New York, NY 10017 USA

Your Excellency,

The Government of the Republic of Somaliland noted with grave concern the statements reportedly made by Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson at a press conference on 9 May following the International Conference on Somalia. I feel obliged to clarify what may be a misunderstanding both about Somaliland's position with regards to international efforts to rebuild Somalia, as well as about my Government's decision not to attend the International Conference.

The Republic of Somaliland government fully supports international efforts to rebuild and stabilize its neighbour, Somalia. A secure and peaceful Somalia that is able to fight terrorism and violent extremism, prevent famine, and eradicate piracy is in Somaliland's national interest. Somaliland therefore participated in the international conference on Somalia that took place in London in 2012. We did so not as part of Somalia's delegation, but in our own right, and our president delivered a speech to the Conference as President of Somaliland.

In his remarks on 9 May, the Deputy Secretary-General implied that Somaliland might have attended this year's Conference as part of Somalia's delegation. This would have been impossible. It would have been a breach of the democratic compact between the government of Somaliland and its citizens, who voted overwhelmingly in a 2001 referendum in favor of our national constitution that declares Somaliland to be independent. The reality is that Somaliland has existed as a separate state for the last 22 years, since the failed Union of Somalia dissolved following a bloody civil war. While we are grateful to all those who provide assistance to support peace and stability in Somalia, we will only join partners in discussions on such issues if we are accorded the appropriate status, as we were in 2012.

We are of course involved in our own discussions with Somalia. The Dialogue between Somaliland and Somalia that recently resumed in Ankara on 13 April provides an important forum for cooperation between our two governments, as highlighted by the communiqué issued on that day. As these talks move forward, we hope that our two governments can agree practical measures to address issues of mutual concern, including terrorism and extremism, piracy, illegal fishing, toxic dumping, and other serious crimes. We hope that the Dialogue can also serve as a peaceful process for Somaliland and Somalia to clarify their future relationship.

My government welcomes the involvement of the UN and its member states in facilitating and creating a favourable environment for these discussions, as we conveyed to the UN's Technical Assessment Mission during its recent visit to Hargeisa. However, such support must be provided without prejudice to a particular outcome, and requires a correct understanding of Somaliland's historic and present situation.

The Government of Somaliland is not the product of a single clan or factional interest. It is the legitimate representative of the people of the former British Somaliland Protectorate that gained independence on 26 June 1960 before entering a voluntary union with Italian Somaliland five days later. After three decades of marginalisation at the hands of a ruthless central government in Mogadishu that culminated in civil war and the massacre of 50,000 of our innocent civilians, the people of Somaliland reasserted their sovereignty and independence in 1991.

A decade later, a referendum was held that included all the regions and clans of Somaliland, in which the peoplevoted overwhelmingly in favour of reaffirming the country's independence and ratifying the national constitution that grants our government the authority to rule.

The five peaceful and credible democratic elections that we have held since then further testify to this legitimacy, and to the hard- won achievements in governance and institution-building that our country has established. By contrast, the Government in Mogadishu is not the outcome of a popular democratic vote, and this is why the communiqué of the recent conference talks about it as being "more legitimate" rather than "legitimate."

During the Somalia transition process, the Somaliland government provided support as an interested neighbour, not as an internal actor. We were not a signatory to either the Somalia End of Transition Roadmap nor the subsequent Garowe I and II principles documents that ratified Somalia's provisional constitution and established the selection processes for its current government.

While we pledge to continue supporting Somalia and other foreign governments in collective efforts to tackle all threats to regional peace and security, we will do so only on the basis that Somaliland is not part of the federal governance structure currently being negotiated between Somalia's regions.

It is a matter for regret that some in the UN Secretariat are apparently not fully or correctly informed about the situation in Somaliland. I would be more than pleased to welcome Deputy Secretary- General Eliasson and other senior UN representatives to visit Hargeisa and witness Somaliland's progress at firsthand. This would also provide a welcome opportunity to discuss how the United Nations and the Somaliland government can continue to work together to support efforts to stabilize and develop the region.

Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Dr. Mohamed A Omar

Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation

The Republic of Somaliland

Somalia: Kismayo Admin Detains 'Troublemakers From Mogadishu'

Kismayo, Somalia May 15, 2013 — A group of persons have been detained at an airport in the southern port town of Kismayo on Tuesday by the local administration, Garowe Online reports.

Confidential sources tell Garowe Online that a flight took off from Mogadishu, with "around 7 to 10 passengers on board" and arrived safely in Kismayo.

On May 13, Kismayo's local administration denied reports that they forced an airplane to return to Mogadishu. READ: Somalia: Flight to Kismayo 'forced to return to Mogadishu'

Tuesday's flight was transporting the same group of persons, such as Mr. Mohamed Amin Abdullahi and Mr. Lugadhere, among others.

However, according to sources, the flight was permitted to land at Kismayo airport after a Djiboutian military officer, who is part of AMISOM peacekeeping force in Mogadishu, called Kenyan-AMISOM troops in Kismayo and asked for landing permission for a flight he was on.

"Once the plane landed, the Djiboutian officer was transported away by fellow AMISOM officers, while the Somali troublemakers from Mogadishu were instructed to return to their flight. However, each of the Somali passengers pulled out documents signed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whereby he [President Hassan] had appointed them all to regional positions," said a source.

The source added that, for example, Mr. Amin was appointed as Lower Jubba governor, while Mr. Lugadhere was appointed as Kismayo mayor. Local administration officials "collected their documents and jailed them at the airport after they refused to return to Mogadishu", the source added.

On May 13, Mr. Amin had spoken on VOA Somali Service and condemned the role of Kenyan-AMISOM peacekeepers and rejected the Kismayo local administration, which is an interim administration until the election of Jubaland leadership.

The report could not be independent verified, as phone lines in Kismayo have been disconnected since Tuesday morning. Sources in Mogadishu corroborated that Mr. Amin and Mr. Lugadhere had "flown to Kismayo with a Djiboutian-AMISOM military officer" but could not confirm what happened at Kismayo's airport.

If confirmed, this development will be President Hassan's last-minute desperate attempt to stop the Jubaland state formation process.

Meanwhile, Jubaland delegates have been allocated and selected, and are expected to elect the Jubaland president very soon.

President Hassan has rejected Jubaland formation, claiming that the Somali Federal Government was not involved, whilst Jubaland communities have publicly invited Federal Government officials to join the state formation process.

Under Somalia's federal system, Jubaland will join other existing states such as Puntland in the north, to form part of the Somali Federal Republic.

Somaliland: One Goal: Decreasing Newborn and Maternal Mortality

By Amy Szabo, Interim Executive Director, Friends of Edna’s Maternity Hospital

She’s been referred to right here on the Huffington Post as the Muslim Mother Teresa.

When you meet Edna Adan Ismail and hear her talk about her life’s work, you understand why. She is charismatic and compassionate, driven, and full of grace and beauty. She’s often been referred to as a “force of nature.” And she has literally committed everything she has to achieve one purpose: decreasing the newborn and maternal mortality rate in Somaliland and the Horn of Africa.

A lot of experiences have directed Edna’s path — she is the daughter of a physician, a UK-trained midwife, the first woman in her country to drive, a former first lady and former foreign minister, and a retired Who Health Organization (WHO) employee — but the amazing experiences she’s had don’t compare to the amazing work that she is doing to provide quality healthcare for women and children at the Edna Adan University Hospital in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

And I don’t even know where to start to tell you about this work. Since Edna cashed in everything she owned to build the hospital, which opened in 2002, she and her team have:
  • Reduced the maternal mortality among their mothers by 75 percent compared to the rest of the country, which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world at 1,600 per 100,0000 births;
  • Delivered over 12,000 babies;
  • Repaired close to 300 obstetric fistulas;
  • Treated over 100,000 people in outpatient clinics;
  • Launched an accredited university to train nurses, midwives, lab technicians, pharmacists, and public health professionals;
  • Trained 24 midwives, 30 nurses, and 14 lab technicians; and
  • Hosted over 100 volunteers from around the world.
Adna Aden founder of Adna Hospital
The Edna Adan University Hospital is not only about providing women and children and the rest of the community with quality healthcare. Through its university programs, Edna is educating women and men, giving them job skills, and, at the same time, sending much-needed medical professionals back out into her country and the world. Yes, her hospital is about maternal, newborn and child health, but it is about women’s education, workforce development, and community economic development as well.

All these facts and numbers, as impressive as they are, don’t do Edna and her hospital justice. You have to see her smile and the fire in her eyes, and listen to her talk about her patients and this vision of a modern, well-equipped, and efficient health care and training facility that she has made a reality through force of will and lots of sacrifice. Get to know Edna through the Half the Sky Movement website, book, or documentary. Explore her hospital’s website or follow her on Facebook or Twitter. And when you fall in love with our friend, Edna Adan, and her life’s work — as we know you will — you’ll want to get involved. That’s what the RaiseForWomen Challenge is all about!
