PAT USA of Rochester Hills, MI announced yesterday they
are in the final stages of opening a branch office in Djibouti, one of the four
countries that make up the Horn of Africa.
Djibouti, slightly smaller than Massachusetts, occupies a
strategic geographic location at the mouth of the Red Sea and serves as an
important transshipment location for goods entering and leaving the east
African highlands. The country is also the terminus of rail traffic into
Ethiopia and hosts the only US military base in sub-Saharan Africa; Camp
Lemonnier.
This facility is located near the Djibouti airport and
the Djiboutian government is allowing the United States to use the base for
demining, humanitarian, and counter-terrorism efforts. From design/build
construction projects on the base to the installation of solar panels and power
plants; many American companies who are doing work in Djibouti are mainly
working at Camp Lemonnier. However, that is the difference between every other
American company and PAT USA.
“We are seeking to work with Djibouti to establish
infrastructure improvements to support the country’s income and population
growth,” said Rick Weaver, Vice President of PAT. After traveling to Djibouti
in mid-2012 and researching the country, PAT is extremely intent on
capitalizing on the country’s growth potential; especially seeing that
Djibouti’s GDP growth shot up from 3.5% in 2010 to 4.8% in 2012 (International
Monetary Fund (IMF) - World Economic Outlook April 2012).
