Benedict Cumberbatch to play WikiLeaks founder in new movie

Press Trust of India / London December 22, 2012

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to play WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in an upcoming movie about the whistleblowing website.

The Golden Globe-nominated "Sherlock" star will take the role of the fugitive boss, who is currently living under sanctuary at the Ecuador embassy in London as he fights moves to extradite him to the US and Sweden, reported Daily Express.

Cumberbatch, 36, could be joined onscreen by another TV favourite, Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, who is "in negotiation" for a role as a computer hacker in the film

The as-yet-untitled movie will be produced by Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks company.

It will focus on the activities of those working for the website, which sparked controversy by leaking hundreds of top secret and classified US military and State department documents since it was formed in 2006.

David Fitzsimmons: No Founding Father intended Somalia in crafting a more perfect union

First comes the tragedy, then the funerals, and then the talking. We will lament our violent culture, give lip service to mental health and walk past the gun lobby like cowards whistling past a cemetery in the dark, until the next mass shooting - one every two weeks according to FBI stats - and then the funerals, and more talking.

And so it goes.

We thank God it wasn't us and simply move on as the circular arguments are argued again and again and again.

Don't waste time telling your gun-advocate friends you spring from a gun family or that you count among your friends gunsmiths, gun-shop owners and hunters. A one-time member of the NRA, at the range I liked the M-16 the best. This means nothing to the zealot. You can be the parent of a dead child pleading for reasonable action and they are unmoved.

Don't waste time learning statistics. The debate is strictly emotional. Tell your friend we have more guns than grains of sand and he'll tell you a grandmother in Ames blew away a rapist with her AK-47 and the discussion is over.

Don't waste anyone's time with total gun bans. Banning all guns is a preposterous fantasy and is the ludicrous counterpoint to the loony NRA at the other end of the spectrum.

Don't waste time dissecting the Second Amendment with Constitutional psychics divining intent.

All of our rights have limits that we, the people, and our courts have agreed upon. No Founding Father intended Somalia as the template for a more perfect union.

Don't expect requiring permits and training for possession of concealed weapons, restoring the ban on combat-style weapons, eliminating gun-purchase loopholes, registering firearms and banning high-capacity clips to be met with anything other than the slippery slope trope that snips reason before it blossoms. Such logic saves my friends from the rigors of thinking.

When I say "immigration reform" my conservative friends hear "amnesty" and the discussion is over.

No matter how many times one says "I believe in the Second Amendment right to bear arms" if one utters the phrase "sensible gun laws" all they hear is "The government is coming to take away your gun!" Perplexed by your naive foolishness, they wonder why you can't see the black helicopters packed with jackboots beyond the horizon. Clutching their NRA membership cards to their chests, the discussion is over.

Don't waste your time pointing out that no citizen, including me, would ever surrender his right to self-defense and that this infantile "Red Dawn" script would lead to 100,000 Ruby Ridges and America's end.

Hawking this paranoid fantasy is the heart of the gun lobby's religion. The gun-damentalist errs on the side of fear, enjoying the romantic and ego-inflating notion he is a lone figure protecting our republic from evil gun snatchers, and overlooking the fact this is the same Keystone Kops government that couldn't raid a compound in Waco, Texas without it becoming a disaster. This mythology makes an ordinary life terribly meaningful.

Twenty schoolchildren are savagely murdered with a combat weapon and we mute our outrage because a lobby built upon promoting this irrational argument owns the cowards in Washington.

Weary of argument, we will instead light a candle in memory of the children of Newtown, in memory of all of the beautiful lights among us that have been extinguished by gun violence this year and in years past. And in an expression of shame at our inability to engage in meaningful common sense action we will pray our nation's leaders will see the light in this hour of darkness.

Somaliland: Would-be Assassins Arrested

Saturday, 22 December 2012

A Las Anod Councillor has escaped from an assassination attempt.

Two people are under the custody of Las anod police where they are being held on suspicion of the failed attempt on the life of Councillor Abdiaziz Husein Ta'arwale on Friday evening.

According to the Sool regional police commander Ali Qase, the two were arrested after a relentless pursuit by security officers who had responded to an alarm raised by residents of the town during the attempted assassination.

Commander Ali Qase who also displayed a number of weapons captured while in possession of the two suspected assassins also informed that one of the prisoners has fatal injuries whose cause is yet to be ascertained.

Among the assortment of items found in possession of the would-be assassins include 4 hand grenades, 3 pistols, 3 submachine guns (AK47) and 7 mobile phones.

The regional police commander, who informed that investigations are underway especially as per the motive of the failed assassination as well as persons behind it, said that the culprits will be arraigned in court soon.
Though Councillor Ta'arwale escaped with only injuries his elimination attempt becomes the second for a member of the Las Anod local council elected on 28th November to be targeted for assassination, following the brutal killing of another civic leader in the town a few days after election.

On the other hand doctors at a Hargeisa hospital indicate that the injured councillor is currently out of danger as he is responding positively to medication. Councillor Ta'arwale arrived in the capital city of Hargeisa in the early hours of this morning to seek advanced medical attention

KENYA: Safety training for journalists in response to increasing dangers in region

ARTICLE 19 has staged a series of practical safety training workshops for more than 20 journalists from Eritrea, Somalia and Rwanda, in response to the increasing risk of in these countries. 24 journalists in total attended the four day session, which ends today (20 December 2012).

“Journalists and human rights defenders from Eritrea, Rwanda and Somalia face particular security challenges, yet they have few skills and little knowledge about how to best protect themselves and how to minimise risks that they may face in the course of their work. The training has been designed to help them to safely continue do their important work. Fear of being attacked or threatened often leads to self-censorship, anything that can be done to make these people safer, protects the free flow of information in society and that is something which is vitally needed in these countries. People need information to participate in the democratic process,” said Henry Maina, Director of ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa.

The training, which was supported by the European Commission, focused on physical safety, digital security, international and national legal frameworks that govern freedom of expression and media ethics.

Journalists were also provided with skills and knowledge about how to create strong networks which they can then use to press authorities to ensure that there is accountability for violations on freedom of expression.

“It was a very timely and practical training on safety and protection and the knowledge I have got will go a long way in ensuring that my work space is secure,” said Gonzaga Muganwa, a journalist from Rwanda.

"The training has assisted me to realise that as a woman journalist there are many things I can do to ensure my safety while in the field," said Faduma Abdi Warsame from Somalia.

“This training has made me realise that as journalists we should be at the forefront of advocating for accountability for attacks on the media. Hence, there is need for creating strong solidarity networks and documenting attacks on freedom of expression,” said Mohamud Hirabe from Somalia.

ARTICLE 19 will conduct further training on the safety and protection of journalists and human rights defenders in early 2013.

Likely increase in AFRICOM activity

December 21, 2012

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is the youngest of the six American Unified Combatant Commands, which divide the world into different areas of responsibility for the United States military. As the name suggests, it deals with the American military operations on the African continent, even though its headquarters are situated in Germany. The main aim of the command is to handle humanitarian aid operations, disaster management and crisis-reactions.

AFRICOM's Commander General Carter Ham announced on 18 December that the African Command would receive a rapid reaction force in the future.
Over the past few months, the United States has attracted attention by its announcement to increase military activities in Asia, particularly around the South China Sea, which is claimed by different bordering countries. However, the United States do also have a growing interest in the African continent. According to estimations of an American think-tank, the United States will obtain one quarter of their oil demand from the African country. The resource-gathering rivalry between the western superpower and its eastern counterpart, China, on the continent is an open secret.

However, AFRICOM’s focus has somewhat shifted; it was reported that US forces have been increasingly focusing on the rising danger of terrorism on the continent, especially in Mali, where Islamic extremists close to the Al-Qaeda terror group have seized northern key cities. Many have warned that the area might develop into a new international hub for terrorist activity. Together with West African nations, the USA and France plan to start a military operation to drive out the radical Islamist forces. The United States have announced that they would back such an intervention with aerial support. Even though a formal resolution of the United Nations Security Council is still due, military and civil authorities have reportedly started with the planning of an African-led international troop in the deserted North of the country.

One of AFRICOM’s main operation areas is the Horn of Africa in the east of the continent. The coast of Somalia, which has been described as a failed state by the US, is partly under the control of pirates, who make money by kidnapping foreign ships in the waters around Somalia and demanding ransoms. As part of the “Operation Enduring Freedom,” the United States, together with other nations of the international community, patrol the regions’ waters and try to enable shipping traffic on the highly important route, which also leads to the Suez Canal.

The United States’ influence on the African continent seems rather low when compared to their power in other areas of the world. In the wake of the deadly attacks against the American embassy in Libya, AFRICOM’s commander General Carter Ham announced on 18 December that the African Command would receive a rapid reaction force in the future. Until then, AFRICOM had relied on an “arrangement with what’s called the Commander’s in-Extremis Force with European Command.” The new special force will allow the United States army to react faster on potential threats on the African continent. It is not clear where the team will be situated, but considering the low American military presence in Africa, it seems possible that the newly created force will rotate its location.

The attack on the embassy in Benghazi has, in general, shaken up the United States of America. Many people asked themselves how the American ambassador was able to be killed, and pointed to the lack of American military presence in the region. In combination with the increasing Islamist influence, especially in the northern half and in the east, it is not unlikely that the United States might increase their engagement in the future.

Somaliland beyond the confines of Al-Mansour Hotel

Friday, 21 December 2012 17:36
By: Mark T Jones

Maansoor Hotel Hargeisa
LONDON (Somalilandsun) - To diplomats, NGO wallahs and journalists a visit to Somaliland seems to centre upon the Al-Mansour Hotel in Hargeisa. Strategically, located in the country's dusty capital, it is redolent in stature at least to the Hotel Sacher in post-war Vienna. A place of intrigue, political horse trading, and deal brokerage the Al-Mansour delights in its status as the favourite watering hole of Government Ministers, trade delegations and those who have yet to develop sufficient spine for a visit to Mogadishu. Strategically placed within easy reach of key ministries the hotel delights in its current status as Somaliland's premier venue for business meetings, press conferences and official receptions. For all the near magnetic qualities of a venue such as the Al-Mansour, like all hotels there is more than a degree of artifice about it. The real Somaliland is to be found beyond its confines, away from the world of crisply pressed suits, seemingly limitless expense accounts and the hurried exchange of business cards.

For an insight into the land that gets beyond the sugared rhetoric and contrived communiqués it is essential to venture forth. By so doing there is a chance of liberation from the sophistry and semantics that crowd in on one from every official encounter. The country like its inhabitants delights in being enigmatic and takes real patience and persistence to discover something of its real self. A land rich in history and enmity, like much of the Horn, Somaliland baffles and bemuses at every turn.

Stark beauty arrests, indifference infuriates, whilst a deep well of faith provides a both a salve as well as salvation. Truth like the galu (plover) is more than not illusive and in so seeking there is always the chance that what you will come across is the abesi (venomous cobra). Any peregrinations exact a heavy price, for the heat saps the will, the dust parches the throat and even when seeking shade from the Dibi or Makari tree it is important to remember that these trees were once used for making stabbing spears. Where ever one chooses to rest the modern equivalent of the herio (baggage saddle) there is a need to be alert for unexpected pleasures, as well vigilance in regard to heshima (loss of face).

Sadly, even in the largely forgotten regions the khat addled politics of Hargeisa impacts greatly. Unnecessary grievances are still being forged and moulded by those whose vocabulary seems to consist of few words other than Imisa (How much?) and I si I si (give me, give me). Present and future tragedies are being shaped, with Somalis such as the Gadaboursi (Samarone) of the Adal/Awdal Region being marginalised, ignored and unheard. The recent local elections have thrown up some interesting results, none more so than in the area around the port town of Saylac (known to the wider world as Zeila) – a strategically located port, long since coveted by Djibouti.

Throughout the Saylac district ten Gadaboursi and seven Issa councillors have recently been elected. With an Issa councillor having been mayor for the last eight years, there should now be a change, as the winning councillors are meant to cast their vote as to who should become Mayor of Saylac. As the Gadaboursi councillors outnumber the Issa counsellors it is clear to see that they would provide the winning vote on a Gadaboursi counsellor becoming Mayor. However, the Issa councillors have not hung around for this to happen, after being called back by the President of Djibouti, they have up and left Saylac and returned home to Djibouti, refusing to take part in any election; branding the whole thing a farce. Historically, the Issa (a clan that straddles Djibouti and Somaliland) has claimed that the Saylac region belongs to the Issa and that no one else should be allowed to be the Mayor of the Saylac region.

The Issa are now claiming the local votes were rigged, despite the fact that the Chairman of the Election Commission, Secretary and First Chairman all being Issa and confirming that the electoral process had been fair and above board. The Issa are outraged at the thought of a Gadaboursi becoming mayor, they feel the Saylac land belongs to them and they are not prepared to let anyone else have any control over the area. Such is the indignation that they are prepared to fight the Gadaboursi people using support from the Djibouti army and its resources. As if such sabre rattling were not bad enough, matters have been exacerbated by the actions of President Silanyo of Somaliland.

On the 16th December 2012 President Silanyo was in Djibouti to attend the 40th anniversary celebration of the Somali becoming a written as well as a spoken language. When the event had finished Silanyo had a private discussion with President Guelleh of Djibouti regarding the Saylac election.

The ever forceful Guelleh, made clear his displeasure concerning the result in Saylac election insisted that Silanyo override the democratic wishes of local people and install an Issa councillor as mayor.

Guelleh went on to threaten President Silanyo, when he made clear that should this not happen, Djibouti will no longer recognise Somaliland as a country which had previously been agreed between the two Presidents. Rather than rebuffing this irredentism on behalf of the Issa, President Silanyo returned to Hargeisa and ordered the Vice President to ensure that an Issa was appointed Mayor of Saylac. To his credit the Vice President, thus far, has refused to do this.

Tribal animosity continues to be the wabayo (a poison made by boiling the roots of the Waba tree) that corrodes the body politic of Somali society. Naturally, the Gadaboursi feel that they are entitled to stand up for their democratic rights and regardless of international indifference, are determined to be heard. They are horrified at the thought of the Presidents of Djibouti and Somaliland acting in concert to ride roughshod over the will of local people.

A clear sense is emerging that they have been caught in the middle and stifle and suffocated by Guelleh's Issa tribe and Silanyo's Issaq. The last thing the Horn needs now is the sound of the Giiraar (war song). The power brokers in Djibouti and Hargeisa would do well to draw back, reassess, engage and support the regions. Resources, aid and development needs to be shared an equitable manner, something which manifestly has not been done thus far. What has been happening in the Adal/Awdal region is a timely reminder that journalists, NGOs and people of goodwill must make a greater effort to break out from the cosseted environment of hotels such as the Al-Mansour and discover what is really taking place.

Below is a clip showing the reactions from the Issa and Gadaboursi people, to date these clips have not been broadcast which shows that the voices of Adal/Awdal are being hidden from the international world:
